D.C. United today announced that the club has acquired defender James Riley from Chivas USA in exchange for a 2015 second round Supplemental Draft pick. Riley, who tied goalkeeper Dan Kennedy for most minutes played (2,880) last year at Chivas USA (32 games played/games started), will join the Black-and-Red immediately in Lake Mary, Fla.

"We are excited to be adding a quality defender in James," said D.C. United General Manager Dave Kasper. "James has over 200 games played in MLS, and his experience will help solidify our backline."

Riley, a Colorado Springs, Colo., native, was drafted by the New England Revolution as the 21st overall pick in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft. In his first year as a professional with New England, he appeared in 23 games (12 starts) and tallied one goal and three assists. Since then, Riley has played with the San Jose Earthquakes, Seattle Sounders FC and Chivas USA, where he was a regular for all three clubs. During his time with Sounders FC, Riley helped lead the team to three consecutive Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups. Riley has played over 2,000 minutes every year since 2007. Over his eight-year MLS career, Riley has logged 17,401 minutes, with two goals and 16 assists to his name.
