By the numbers: D.C. United vs San Jose Earthquakes

Already hailed as 'Match of the Year', Wednesday's thriller featured lots of offense

D.C. United saw its seven-game unbeaten streak come to an end at the hands of Major League Soccer's next hottest team on Wednesday night.  Here are a few key statistics from San Jose's 5-3 win over the Black-and-Red.

The number of shots taken by Steven Lenhart isa pretty clear indicator of how any match involving the Earthquakes is going,and the fact that the pesky forward found time and space for five attempts ongoal Wednesday night means that San Jose were in control.  Whistled offsides four times, Lenhartwas seemingly everywhere throughout his ninety-minute stint.  Five is also the number of goalsLenhart has in his two most-recent appearances against the Black-and-Red.

D.C. United's number of attempts on goalWednesday night fell just one short of the club's season best (22 vs. NewEngland on April 14).  Down 3-1 atthe half, the Black-and-Red chose to aggressively chase the result and wereeffective in creating chances in the second-half.  Nine different players registered a shot, including allthree second half substitutes.

Discounting corner kicks and free kicks, thiswas the percentage of completed passes for San Jose's Marvin Chavez and TressorMoreno combined.  Though they didn't score and registered just a single assist between them, the pair of Earthquakenewcomers allowed Frank Yallop's side to keep possession in D.C.'s final third for extended periods of time.  The Honduran and the Colombian connected on 48 of their combined 58 passes.

The amount of minutes it took for the 'Quakes to turn a one-goaldeficit into a commanding 3-1 lead just before the second half.  United couldn't keep themselves withinstriking distance heading into the break and again when San Jose ramped up theattack in the second-half.  Thehosts' backbreaking fourth and fifth goals came just five minutes apart andeffectively ended D.C.'s hopes of a comeback.
