By the Numbers: D.C. United vs New York Red Bulls

Sunday's scoreboard not the only way to calculate D.C.'s dominance

When a team wins 4-1, there are few other numbers that matter.  Still, in looking back at the statistics from Sunday night's thrashing of New York, we can see exactly how D.C. took control of the Atlantic Cup.

57.4%

By owning possession in the first-half, D.C. dominated more than just the scoreline over the first 45 minutes.  While the Black-and-Red were having a field day, New York managed just one shot on goal in the opening half.  When the Red Bulls wanted to get back into the game, United had the ball.

The number of New Yorkshots on goal by anybody not named Thierry Henry.  The Red Bull midfield failed to threaten United's goal evenonce, and the lone non-Henry effort didn't come until the 64th minute via KennyCooper.

While New York'sdisjointed attack didn't get many shots on frame it's not as though the RedBulls weren't trying, and D.C.'s blocked shot count is a testament to that.  Perhaps the most important block came in the 24th minute when - while defending on a corner kick - Nick DeLeonheaded away Mehdi Ballouchy's right-footed blast.  At the time D.C. was clinging to a one-goal lead and, had DeLeon failed to intervene, the score might have been leveled.

The number of completedpasses from … Daniel Woolard. That's right, D.C.'s left back made good on more of his passes than anyother United player Sunday night.  RobbieRussell (42) and Perry Kitchen (41) also helped the Black-and-Red ping the ballaround a frustrated New York side.
