D.C. United announced today that the club has waived forward Blake Brettschneider. The 22-year-old departs United after completing his rookie season with the team last year.

“We’d like to thank Blake for his contributions to our club,” said D.C. United General Manager Dave Kasper. “He was very well-liked and a good professional and we wish him the best in the future.”

Brettschneider was originally selected 21st overall in the 2011 Supplemental Draft and went on to play in 15 MLS matches (9 starts) last season. The Georgia native scored his first regular season goal on June 11, 2011 against San Jose, and he provided two assists in United’s memorable 3-2 victory at JELD-WEN Field against Portland. In Reserve League action, Brettschneider was United’s second-leading goal scorer with three tallies, one strike away from forward Joseph Ngwenya.

Prior to joining United, Brettschneider spent four years at the University of South Carolina, scoring 19 goals and contributing 17 assists.
