Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service
D.C. United kicked off its 2012 United Builds program by celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service at Maya Angelou Public Charter School in Northeast DC.
The MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve, the President's national call to service initiative. It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems.
While the President and First family visited an elementary school in Northeast DC, the Black-and-Red were four miles away at Maya Angelou Public Charter School to help beautify and upgrade the school's interior. For the third year in a row, the Black-and-Red teamed up with Greater DC Cares in an effort to help a local public school. United's Front Office staff helped to paint classrooms and sort books in the library.
D.C. United has a strong tradition of community service - especially around holidays. "We used this opportunity as a day-on and not a day-off of work!" explained Aprile Pritchet, United's Director of Community Relations. "This marks the clubs first of many volunteer events we will participate in over the course of the 2012 season."
