Tournament Recap: PWSI Toys For Tots

Successful second weekend for 16th annual tournament

Prince William Soccer, Inc. hosted dozens of teams from across Virginia and Maryland in the second phase of its 16th Annual Toys For Tots Tournament over the holiday weekend, and several of the home club’s squads came away big winners in one of the area’s final warm-up events before the onset of fall league competition.

Much of the tourney’s first-weekend schedule was lost to Hurricane Irene, but thankfully no tropical storms made an appearance as the event’s Under-13 through Under-19 age groups took part in a busy slate of matches at several facilities across Prince William County, Va. on Saturday and Sunday, as well as several championship games on Monday morning.

PWSI teams won 10 of the weekend’s 23 divisions, taking top honors in the U13B Red, U14G Red, U15B Red, U15G Red, U16B Red, U16G Red, U19B Red and U19G Red brackets, while several VISTA (Virginia Independent Soccer Team Association), SYC (Springfield Youth Club) SASA (Stafford Area Soccer Association) and Beach FC teams also turned in promising performances.

But results were only one aspect of the event, which also features a laudable humanitarian component as each participating player is asked to bring a new child’s toy to donate to the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve’s annual charity drive. Coaches were keen to integrate new members of their teams and in many cases, implement new tactical and positional ideas.

Potomac Soccer Wire caught plenty of the weekend’s action and also spoke to a diverse range of coaches about the tournament, their teams’ development processes, the upcoming season and more. PSW will be posting summaries and analysis below, so check back to this page for more coverage as the week unfolds.
