McDONALD BRINGS LEADERSHIP TO DEFENSE

The focus of D.C. United's training session Wedesday was put on defense as the club worked through four-on-four drills between attackers and the back four. Newcomer Brandon McDonald got his first chance to work in game-like situations with his new teammates.

McDonald, acquired Monday from San Jose, complimented his young defensive mates and hopes to bring a veteran presence to the backline.

"There's a lot of talent on this squad," McDonald said after training. "Hopefully I can come here and add [talent] by bringing my presence to the backline, bring some kind of stability back there. I'm excited to get playing."

McDonald also earned praise from Head Coach Ben Olsen.

"He's a vocal guy. I think he's a real 'take charge' type of kid - another thing, right now, I think we need," Olsen said. "We've got some injuries. We had to make some adjustments and some additions in the back. I think he's going to be good for this team."

NGWENYA RETURNS TO TRAINING

Almost two weeks after suffering a sprained right MCL, forward Joseph Ngwenya participated in most of the team's training activities Wednesday. Though his status is questionable for Saturday's match against the Philadelphia Union (7:00 P.M. EST/Comcast SportsNet), Ngwenya's return will bring depth to D.C. United at the forward position with his 17 career goals in MLS.
