Tenth Annual United Celebrity Golf Tournament raises more than $40,000
United for D.C., the charitable arm of D.C. United, announced today that the Tenth Annual United Celebrity Golf Tournament, presented by GEICO, raised more than $40,000. Proceeds from the event will benefit the charity’s three signature programs - United Reads, Kicks for Kids and United Soccer Club - all of which use soccer to place an emphasis on literacy, healthy lifestyles and life skills for underserved youth in the greater Metropolitan Area.
“The United Celebrity Golf Tournament is one of our most successful and entertaining events of the year,” said Program Manager Kat Cheshire. “Guests are able to see and enjoy a different side of the D.C. United team and organization in a relaxed environment. The event brings D.C. United players, sponsors, and fans together with corporate supporters and other celebrities for a day on the golf course to raise money for a great organization.”
The event drew more than 140 golfers to 1757 Golf Club in Virginia for a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start on Monday, June 20. Guests enjoyed 18 holes of golf, numerous hole contests, featuring Volkswagen’s offer of a car for a hole in one, a silent auction, and an awards reception.
Wes Greenway Volkswagen of Alexandria and Waldorf featuring D.C. United forward Josh Wolff won the tournament, with D.C. United Alumni AJ Wood and friends, and Dominic Turano and friends featuring D.C. United Alumni Jaime Moreno rounding out the top three, respectively.
Participants in this year’s event played alongside the 2011 D.C. United players and coaches as well as United President and CEO Kevin Payne, Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber, Soccer United Marketing President Kathy Carter, D.C. United General Manager Dave Kasper, U.S. National Team player DaMarcus Beasley, D.C. United alumni A.J. Wood, Mike Ammon, and Jaime Moreno. Other local personalities included FOX 5 News Anchor Steve Chenevey, WJLA 7 Sports Reporter Britt McHenry, Comcast SportsNet personality and the event’s emcee Russ Thaler, former U.S. Women’s National Team player Christie Welch, along with Washington Redskins Anthony Armstrong and alumni Ken Harvey.
“We are extremely grateful to Geico, our presenting sponsors and all of the hole sponsors, participants, and in-kind sponsors who help make our tournament a success,” continued Cheshire. “In addition to the presenting sponsor Geico, United for D.C. benefited from the generous assistance of hole sponsors American Airlines, Clark Construction, GSI, Volkswagen of Alexandria and Waldorf, Volkswagen of America, and Putting Contest sponsor T.D. Bank.”
