United Soccer Club celebrates the end of its fall season

More than 500 young athletes from the D.C. area participated

D.C. United and United for D.C. celebrated the end of United Soccer Club's fall season on November 17 and 19 with a tournament at RFK Stadium's Auxiliary Field.  Over the two days more than 500 young athletes from the D.C. area participated in soccer matches and other activities designed to promote physical activities and proper nutrition. Each athlete who participated in the United Soccer Club's capstone event received a medal to commemorate their participation in the club's fall season.

D.C. United players Clyde Simms, Dejan Jakovic, Bill Hamid, Stephen King and Barry Rice helped coach and encourage participants as well as signed autographs.

2010 FALL SEASON A SUCCESS

United Soccer Club's fall season was a huge success. Almost 700 children enrolled in the program.  Each participant was taught the importance of a healthy lifestyle through physical activity and proper nutrition, as well as life skills that are beneficial on and off the field. The club met twice a week, after school, for 90 minute sessions at several sites across the D.C. area. Participants were taught by D.C. United staff, current and former United players, and 35 other talented local coaches.

This season, United Soccer Club also started taking field trips to area gardens and urban farms. The trips allowed participants to connect food production with proper nutrition. The fall session also had a number of special events.  The club partnered with Let's Move and The President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition for a soccer clinic on the South Lawn of the White House and took a canoe trip on the Anacostia River in partnership with the District's Department of Parks and Recreation.
