Post-match quotes: D.C. United 0 – Chivas USA 1

Sunday, August 29 - The Home Depot Stadium

D.C. United Head Coach Ben Olsen

On the team’s performance tonight:

I think there was a lot more tonight to be pleased with than not. It’s always tough right after a game to judge it that well; it’s better to watch it the next day. But I think overall it was a good performance. I thought we put on a good show at times. Our final ball wasn’t there and that was disappointing, because they guys out there deserved a result tonight I thought. They did what we asked them, to go out and play with confidence and move the ball around. It just wasn’t our day in the final third.

On the team’s progress since he became head coach:

Our record hasn’t been great, let’s face it, but I really feel like the guys have responded in a positive way. The commitment has been good, and really I can’t ask for much more from these guys right now. They’re doing what they can, I’m doing what I can. This isn’t a knock on what was happening before. Sometimes everyone needs a wake-up call, and maybe Kurt [Onalfo] had to take the fall for that. There’s been a sense of urgency to get this season back on track and we’re doing our best.

On preparing for Wednesday’s Open Cup game:

It’s a tall order to come out here and come back for a Wednesday game, but we’re certainly up for it. A couple guys stayed home to rest and be ready for that game, and some of the guys that we played and we pushed tonight, that are going to play Wednesday, were some of our fittest guys, so they’re going to have to get through Wednesday.

D.C. United midfielder Stephen King

On the team’s performance:

I thought overall we actually played pretty well. I felt we had a lot of the possession, we created a decent amount of chances, had a lot of corner kicks, had the ball in their end a lot, but it’s just been the theme of the season, where we create things but we just don’t finish them. Justin Braun scored a nice goal in the first half for them, and we just couldn’t put one away.

On giving up the first goal early:

We started off well. First 10 minutes, first 20 minutes we actually played really well. So it was kind of unfortunate. Credit to them for finding a way to score, and we just need to figure out how to do better and be more precise in the final third.

On transitioning to Wednesday:

It starts tonight with the preparation. We know we have a chance to win a trophy this year, so we’re going to take that very seriously, because we can still win something this year and that’s important.

D.C. United midfielder Santino Quaranta

On the start of the match:

I thought we were in control of the game, and really all the way through. I think that it was a tough one, it was kind of out-of-the-blue, the first goal. I thought we bounced back, our possession was pretty good. I don’t think we were decisive enough in the final third when the ball was up there. Overall, all we can ask of the guys is the effort, and for me I think everybody gave a good effort.

On converting possession into goals:

Being more decisive, taking guys on, being more aggressive, and a little bit of luck maybe would help. Other than that, it’s just about finishing your chances, we’ve talked about this all year.
