D.C. United to welcome Rangers to RFK
D.C. United booked another summer visit from a majorEuropean club, announcing Wednesday that Scottish power Rangers will be makinga visit to RFK Stadium on July 24.
Rangers are easily the most successful team in Scotland’shistory. Recently crowned Scottish Premier League champions for a 53rd time, theGlasgow-based club also has 33 Scottish Cups and 26 Scottish League Cups to itsname, as well as runners-up medals from the 2008 UEFA Cup.
“Glasgow Rangers are one of the world’s most storied clubsand it’s an honor for D.C. United to compete against them,” said D.C. United presidentand CEO Kevin Payne in a statement. “Rangers fans are famous for their loyaltyand passion, and we look forward to welcoming them to RFK Stadium this summer.”
Walter Smith’s squad counts U.S. internationals DaMarcusBeasley and Maurice Edu among its ranks, although Beasley will be out of acontract by season end and his future with the club remains uncertain. FormerU.S. captain Claudio Reyna also spent a memorable two seasons at Ibrox.
The match is D.C.’s second announced friendly against a bigEuropean club this summer. AC Milan will also visit RFK on May 26.
Rangers are also in talks to play Old Firm archrival Celticat Boston’s Fenway Park on July 21. Celtic will take on Seattle Sounders FC atQwest Field on July 18.
