D.C. native Wale to perform before D.C. United’s home opener

Washington, D.C. (March 12, 2010) - D.C. United announced today hip-hop artist and DC native Wale will perform before its home opener on Saturday, April 3 when the team takes on the New England Revolution at RFK Stadium. The performance kicks-off the club’s ‘It Takes More Concert Series,’ which will include pre-game performances by local bands and artists and an element to highlight local community organizations at every 2010 home game.

“We are thrilled to have Wale perform at our home opener on April 3,” said D.C. United President & CEO Kevin Payne. “It is the perfect start to our ‘It Takes More Concert Series’, which we’ve created to both support local music and to draw attention to those community organizations in the metro area that are doing great things each and every day.”

Wale’s April 3 performance will take place at 6 p.m. ET on the Armory Mall on the west side of RFK Stadium, before United’s first home game of the year. The team will take on the visiting New England Revolution at 7:30 p.m. ET. The concert is free and open to the public.

The ‘It Takes More Concert Series’ is a season-long endeavor for D.C. United that will showcase Washington-area bands and artists during pre-game concerts at each home game, as well as highlight a local community organization focused on improving the lives of those in the Washington area. A range of artists and bands will be featured, reflecting the diverse make-up of United’s fan base. The full concert schedule will be announced at a later date.

“In addition to providing our loyal fans with great, local music, we are equally focused on continuing to draw attention to the important work being done by community organizations both in the District and the surrounding area,” said Payne. “United’s mission statement is to ‘win championships and serve the community’ and we try to reflect that in everything we do.”

At United’s April 3 game, the club will feature a long-standing community organization in the Washington D.C. Metro Area Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit housing organization founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a decent, safe and affordable place to live. To date, the international organization has built more than 300,000 houses, sheltering more than 1.5 million people in more than 3,000 communities worldwide. Look for a continued partnership between the Washington D.C. Metro Area Habitat for Humanity, D.C. United and other great sponsors as they do a 3-site build later this season.

Born and raised in D.C., Wale broke out in 2005 when he appeared in Source magazine’s vaunted Unsigned Hype column, the same column that launched the careers of the Notorious B.I.G., Common, and Mobb Deep. Wale has released several successful mixtapes, including Mixtape About Nothing and Back to the Feature. His debut album Attention: Deficit was released in September on Allido Records/Interscope and includes the hit singles “Chillin” featuring Lady Gaga, and the more recently released “Pretty Girls.” He has performed at the MTV Video Music Awards and recently is coming off a college tour with Jay-Z.
