D.C. United’s Santino Quaranta undergoes successful surgery

WASHINGTON, D.C. (October 14, 2009) - D.C. United announced today Santino Quaranta underwent successful surgery for a ruptured plantar plate in his left foot’s first metatarsal. Dr. Lew Schon at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland performed the operation Tuesday afternoon. Quaranta is expected to make a full recovery, but will be out of action for 4-6 months. The injury is the same one Quaranta suffered on his right foot in 2006 while a member of the New York Red Bulls.

Appearing in 22 games (19 starts) this season, Quaranta set a career high assist mark with six helpers in addition to scoring two goals. In all competitions, the Baltimore native has made 28 appearances (22 starts) and recorded two goals and nine assists. Following his impressive play during the first half of the season, Quaranta earned his first U.S. Men’s National Team call-up since 2006. Playing in a Gold Cup game at RFK Stadium on July 8, Quaranta scored his first-ever goal in a US jersey. In total, Quaranta played four games with the Men’s National Team during the summer.
