D.C. United’s Simms and Khumalo undergo successful surgeries

Washington, D.C. (July 24, 2009) - D.C. United announced today midfielder Clyde Simms and forward Thabiso Khumalo underwent successful surgeries. Simms traveled to Munich, Germany to have sports hernia surgery on his right side performed by Dr. Ulrike Muschaweck. Simms is expected to miss two to three weeks. Khumalo had wrist surgery yesterday to repair a broken radius suffered during United’s Open Cup game on July 21. The surgery was performed by Dr. Christopher Annunziata of Commonwealth Orthopaedics in Virginia, and Khumalo is expected to miss four to six weeks.

In his fifth season with the team, Simms has quietly stepped up as one of United’s hardest-working players. Simms has played 1,557 minutes in all 18 League games so far this year (all starts), second on the team only to Bryan Namoff (1,620). Last year, the midfielder solidified himself as the team’s first option at defensive midfield and played in all but three minutes of United’s entire League season. His 30 games played, 30 starts, 2,697 minutes played and two goals were all career highs. He also contributed two assists in League play. In all competitions, he played in 45 games (43 starts), tallying two goals and three assists. His 3,849 minutes in all competitions was the most-ever for a United player.

Khumalo has played in eight games (two starts) this season and dished out an assist. Playing in all U.S. Open Cup games, he has scored three goals to help United reach the final on Sept. 2. Khumalo joined the Black-and-Red late last season, signing on 9/12/08. He finished the season with seven League appearances (six starts) and notched a goal and an assist in 468 minutes on the field. He also played in all six CONCACAF Champions League games (four starts).
