D.C. United acquires Mamadou Danso
Washington, D.C. (February 17, 2009) – D.C. United announced today the club acquired defender Mamadou Danso via the waiver wire process last Friday, Feb. 13. The African defender joins United after two seasons at Southern Polytechnic State University.
“We are pleased to have obtained Mamadou from the MLS waiver process,” said United General Manager Dave Kasper. “He is a strong central defender with a big, physical presence and we look forward to giving him an opportunity to earn a spot with D.C. United.”
Originally from Serrekunda, Gambia, Danso played two seasons at Southern Polytechnic in Marietta, Georgia from 2007-2008. Despite being a natural centerback, Danso played primarily as a forward, where he posted an impressive total of 35 goals in two years. He was named the 2008 Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Player of the Year, Offensive Player of Year, First Team Selection ('07 and '08) and Newcomer of the Year ('07), and was honored by the NAIA as a member of the 2008 All-America Honorable Mention Team.
Danso also spent a part of 2008 with the Carolina Railhawks U-23 side, the Cary Clarets, who play in the USL Premier Development League. Danso made a total of eight appearances for the Clarets, starting every game he played in, and contributed two goals in 675 minutes of action.
