D.C. United Academy update: February 4, 2009

UVA tour: D.C. United’s U16 squad got a chance to see what a top collegiate program looks like last weekend during their visit to the University of Virginia. After playing a friendly against SOCA (Soccer Organization of Charlottesville/Albemarle) on Saturday, January 31, the team got a tour of UVA’s state of the art locker room with film editing and viewing equipment, a flat screen TV, couches and everything players need to be comfortable in their locker room.

“It was a good chance for our players to see the University of Virginia and meet the staff,” said United Director of Youth Development, and former UVA player, John Maessner. “This is definitely one of the premier soccer programs and academic schools in the country and it was nice for our boys to get a chance to see it up close.”

Friendlies: D.C. United's Academy teams will play friendly matches again this weekend in preparation for the recommencement of the Academy league. On Saturday, the U18s will play Affiliate Club U17 Freestate at 12:30 p.m. at Bishop McNamara High School, while the U16s will play the Pennsylvania powerhouse, U17 YMS Explosion on Sunday.

D.C. United officially kick off their 2009 Development Academy season on February 14 and 15 at the Maryland Soccerplex. The U16s will face FC Westchester at 1 p.m. with the U18s following at 3 p.m. United’s youth teams will then face Met Oval on Sunday, with the U16s playing at 11 a.m. and the U18s at 1 p.m.

Summer Camps: The Youth Academy recently released its schedule for the series of summer camps in 2009. The summer program offers a variety of training opportunities tailored to provide a fun and rewarding experience, while encouraging players to develop their full potential.
