Today, April 5, 2013 marks the official 100-year anniversary of the U.S. Soccer Federation. Since its inception, U.S. Soccer’s mission has been clear—make soccer a predominant sport in the U.S. and facilitate development at every level of competition.

The Centennial is truly a testament to U.S. Soccer’s supporters and participants, including players, coaches, referees, volunteers, ambassadors, and most of all the fans.

U.S. Soccer has reached many milestones in the years preceding its Centennial. The Women’s U.S. National Team has won two World Cups and four Olympic Gold Medals. The U.S. Men’s National team has enjoyed recent success, qualifying for the World Cup six times in a row, and reaching the quarterfinals in 2002, the first time in 72 years.

Additionally, Major League Soccer is in its 18th season. The high level of competition between the League’s 19 teams and 13 soccer specific stadiums has boosted media coverage to an all-time high.

In honor of this remarkable day, U.S. Soccer hosted a press conference at New York’s City Hall, along with a watch party for the U.S. Women’s National Team’s exhibition game against Germany, which ended in a 3-3 tie.

Lastly, if you’re in New York City tonight, make sure to look up at the top of the Empire Sate Building, as it will boast U.S. Soccer’s red, white and blue.

Traveling with his father, D.C. United legend John Harkes to the UK, Black-and-Red Academy standout Ian Harkes met and took a picture with Chelsea FC superstar Frank Lampard. Harkes and Lampard are posing for the camera at Stamford Bridge, the Blues' storied stadium in central London. Lampard recently tallied his 200th goal for Chelsea against former team West Ham United on March 18.

Currently featuring for the United U-18s, Harkes will be headed to Wake Forest University to play collegiate soccer in the fall.

Right on cue for Major League Baseball's opening day, Mark Willis, a Boston-based web designer and soccer enthusiast released his take on thejersey designs for all 30 MLB teams. But there was something different about them...All of the jerseys were designed as soccer kits.

The project, which took Willis three months to complete, takes an in-depth look into the history of the MLB uniforms, and the teams who wear them. Enjoy.

In the 41st minute of the game against the Columbus Crew, with the score tied 1-1, D.C. United midfielder Kyle Porter tallied the go-ahead goal that was soon overturned due to teammate Lionard Pajoy’s passive offside position. MLSsoccer.com’s Nick Firchau examined the call and explains why Porter’s strike should have stood:

  1. Pajoy – in a passive offside position – runs toward the ball, but does NOT interfere with the play because he did not touch or actually play with the ball.
  2. Pajoy did NOT prevent any opponent from getting to the ball, nor did he obstruct a sight line.
  3. Pajoy did NOT make a gesture that deceived or distracted an opponent; simply moving toward the ball is not enough to do so.
  4. The Assistant Referee waving the flag to signal an offside does not stop the play; the Referee must blow his whistle, but Allen Chapman allowed play to continue (i.e. As the saying goes, play to the whistle).
