March to March 9: D.C. United Academy Spotlight
Fourteen members of D.C. United’s U-18 Academy team committed to Division I universities on February 6, 2013 (National Signing Day), and among these bright, young stars was midfielder/defender Abdi Yusuf.
While Yusuf will take his talents to the University of Central Florida for the 2013 fall season, he has contributed mightily over three years as a United youth player. Yusuf appeared in one Reserve League match last year, a 2-0 loss to the Columbus Crew on Oct. 2, and has two goals in the 2012-2013 USSDA season so far. The Herndon, Va., native also helped the U-16s make a run at the 2012 USSDA National Championship in Houston last year. Before joining the Black-and-Red, Yusuf was part of a two-time Virginia State Cup championship team and was also a member of the U-14 U.S. National Team pool.
As part of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy system, D.C. United's Academy teams and training programs are designed to find and develop the top players in the Washington region. Our coaches and staff emphasize playing attractive, possession-oriented soccer. The ultimate goal is to prepare players for the club's First Team or the nation's top university teams.
