Steadying the ship in United’s most tumultuous season, Ben Olsen took over as Interim Head Coach from Curt Onalfo on August 7 away to the New England Revolution. The Black-and-Red showed marked improvement under Olsen, winning on August 22 2-0 over Philadelphia and beating eventual MLS Cup Champion Colorado 1-0 on the road on October 1. United also got to the semifinal round of the 2010 U.S. Open Cup, falling in extra time to the Columbus Crew. The lasting image of the 2010 campaign was of club captain and 15-year MLS veteran Jaime Moreno taking his lap of honor around RFK Stadium on October 23 in his final match for D.C. United against Toronto FC. Moreno retired as MLS’ all-time leading goal scorer with 133 tallies.
