Bryan Namoff chat transcript

Friday, July 17 - 1:00 PM ET

Read Bryan Namoff's answers to your questions.

D.C. United faces the Colorado Rapids on Saturday at 8 p.m. ET at RFK Stadium. The team will be looking for a bit of revenge after falling 3-0 in Colorado on June 20. The Black-and-Red also have its U.S. Open Cup semifinal game against the Rochester Rhinos just around the corner - Tuesday, July 21 at the Maryland SoccerPlex.

Do you think you'll ever get a callup up for the national team? I think you deserve one

Talk to Bob. I would love the opportunity.

I thought I had a chance for the Gold Cup - oh well, that means I have to work that much harder for DC and hope that my number is called in the future.

That's all I have time for today, guys. Thanks for the great questions, I had a lot of fun. I love fun. It’s always nice to have these types of interactions with the fans – you guys are the best and thanks for all of your support of me over the years.

Get yourself out to RFK tomorrow for our game against the Rapids. I better be the loudest cheer when my name is announced pre-game tomorrow.

See you there.

When are you coming home to visit?
Your dad!

I’ll be headed to see the old man during Christmastime in good ol’ Rockford, Illinois. Make sure you get the poker table out!

I'm Matt from the first one. I'm sorry for calling you Brian, Namoff.

Just when I think you couldn’t be any dumber, you go and pull something like this… and TOTALLY REDEEM YOURSELF!

[Ed. note – a quote from Dumb and Dumber. Namoff loves that one.]

hi bryan why is santino quaranta so much better looking then you

Santino is better looking than me only because he uses large quantities of murray’s in his hair which allow his spikes to be strong enough to pierce skin.

However, if you think he’s better looking, I can certainly say I dress better than him. Case in point.

Silver, gold, platinum! Boo-yah, Tino! Good luck on Saturday.

Mr. @Namoff,

What do you do to prepare for the UNLEASHing?

Eat spinach? One handed push-ups? NO handed push ups?

Once UNLEASHed, do you think you would be able to turn back time, like Superman did when he made the Earth revolve in the opposite direction in Superman (the movie)?

Thanks

mighty!

I prepare by eating large quantities of cereal – cinnamon toast crunch (my spinach). Once I am on a full sugar high, I continue the unleashing with several hundred rounds of perfect Zohan-like push-ups and I throw in an additional P-90 X workout or twelve. After several hundred squats, I don’t necessarily think I could turn back time, but when I look to the future I see myself hoisting trophy after trophy while wearing my black United kit.

Are you excited about defending Kaka and C. Ronaldo? Seems like a pretty fun challenge for a defender, especially in a friendly.

I wouldn’t call it “fun” when they’re running full speed at you. It’s always exciting to match up against the best and see what you’re made of. I hope to be able to play in front of the biggest crowd of my career, so make sure you bring your friends. Can we sell out FedEx field?

I heard a rumor that you are the fastest on the team. If that is true, what exactly does that mean? Are you the fastest that can run in a straight line in a short distance or do you have the fastest acceleration speed? If that is not true who is the fastest in both categories?

That’s a lot to answer in one quick question. I’m faster than the average bear [laughs].

I was the fastest in the 40-yard dash in pre-season, but it’s a lot different when you get onto the field. Jaime is definitely the fastest when dribbling full speed with the ball. Boyzzz is a quick little South African, when he has room to accelerate. Rodney has deceptively long legs and can cover ground quickly.

Toughest player to mark in the MLS?

Bryan Namoff.

Seriously, though, Landon.

You vs. Ditka, who wins?

Ditka! Go Bears!

Which goalie and which central defender have made you the most comfortable in your right back position at United? I know this is D.C., but please try not to be political and just say "all of them have been really steady." Thanks!

Gee, I wonder, you two have the same name, Ryan!

If you don’t know by now, it’s Ryan Nelsen, who is the captain of the Blackburn Rovers in the English Premier League. I taught him everything he knows.

I can’t say that I miss rooming with Troy Perkins on the road, but it’s nice to see that he’s getting the recognition that he deserves with the U.S. National Team. He was a great goalkeeper to play with.

This may be totally unrelated to soccer, but, how do you spend your days when you're not practicing with the team or not on the road? Also, do you have teams that you support besides DC United? Like teams from the Bundesliga, EPL, SPL, etc?

I like to do a lot of handyman projects around the house. I like eating, especially when the wifey is cooking an unbelievable pre-game meal. Otherwise, I am a expert at Mario Kart on the Wii. I challenge anyone.

Da Bears!

How are you going to slow down Omar Cummings on Satuday?

Foul, foul, foul.

We need to make sure we’re behind the ball, stay compact, we’re behind the ball, stay compact, and we should also stay behind the ball and stay compact.

[Devon McTavish just popped in and says, “force him backwards.”]

What kind of mistakes did United make aganist the rapids last month and how does the team plan on fixing them?

We made the mistake of playing at altitude. We made the mistake of playing three games in a week.

Honestly, it was a difficult match we’d rather just sweep under the rug and pay them back at RFK for an awful loss up there. I want to beat Guppy.

Bryan,

You've assumed more of a leadership roll with DC United this season. How has this transition to a team leader made you an over-all better player?

Keep up the great work (and good luck on Saturday!)

- Ted

Well, more than anything, it’s allowed me to pick on the rookies and boss around everyone. It’s nice having coffee ready for me when I come in the morning and a bagel at my locker.

Seriously, it’s great to be able to help out some of the younger guys and rookies. I’ve been in the League for a long time now and I hope I can provide some guidance for them. They push me to be a better player, so I try to help out where I can.

Hi Mr. Namoff! How do you feel that you are going to play Real Madrid again? Also what other teams outside of MLS do you like? :)

Well, the last time we played them in front of 67,000 fans in Seattle and tied 1-1, so that’s going to be hard to beat, especially with them having Ronaldo and Kaka. I’ll need a superpower during this game!

Da Bears!

Did ya'll have a good time in Charleston during the preseason? Me and my buds were cheering ya'll on!

Charleston is by far one of the best pre-season trips we go on and believe me, I’ve been on some terrible ones – Guadalajara when I got the “Mexican Monster,” was in bed for three days and lost ten pounds – don’t drink the water or eat fruit, in my case. Segovia, Spain – it snowed a foot the day we arrived and we had to train in it for two weeks. ¡No bueno!

What would be your superhero name slash your super power?

Quadzilla.

Do you think that Tom Soehn should play more starters in U.S. open cup games against USL opponents? Why do you think the team struggled so much against a division IV Ocean City Barons team and what are your thoughts on young talent trying to break into the MLS? It seems pretty hard to get there and stay there.

Anytime you play in Germantown and in the Open Cup, it’s always been a struggle. Why, do you ask? The whole setting is different and when you’re playing lower level teams, they have a tendency to play up to your level – and likewise, MLS teams have a tendency to play down – for them, it’s usually the biggest game of their careers and they come out firing.

I’m glad that we don’t play a lot of the starters early on in those games, because it’s a great opportunity for some of the guys who don’t log the majority of minutes to get their chance to show they belong on the field.

We’ve had two great standouts so far this year in Chris Pontius and Rodney Wallace, and I think you’re starting to see that younger players, especially with our team, are now being given the opportunity to jump in right away in a starting role. I think it’s pretty rare that you see the younger players making such an impact early in their career, such as those knuckleheads.

And as some of the veterans, such as myself, keep getting fitter and better as the years progress, it will definitely be more difficult to knock us off the pedestal. Yes, we are legends in our own minds [laughs].

Fantastic job this year Bryan on the pitch and in the community as well; kudos to you and your family.
Not to jump Coach's train or anything but could you give me YOUR United starting 11 and why? If you could bring 1 other player from our league into the squad who would it be and why.
We're all family here, just curious.
Thanks,
UP UNITED!!!!

First of all, what’s all this Bryan talk? Don’t folks know I go by Namoff? Why else would my twitter handle be @NAMOFF?

It’s not my decision on the starting XI, I leave those decisions up to the coaches, but this year we have so much depth to our team, that anyway can step in and be competitive.

I’d like to bring in Landon Donovan, because I hate marking him – he’s so quick. And right now, he’s been on fire for the U.S. - what do you guys think?

Or Blanco, because it seems every time I play against him I get a red card… and he gets every foul called his way.

Brian, it's transfer season yet again and I hear Real Madrid's looking for a solid right back. Joking aside, I've heard that former Juventus star Pavel Nedved is considering playing in MLS for a season or two. Do you think a player of his caliber could suit up for DC United? Can you pass the word on to Tommy? Thanks and good luck for the rest of the season.

Let’s get one thing straight. It’s Br-Y-an.

Yet, no one calls me by first name, anyway – I haven’t been called that since the first grade. It’s just Namoff. I’m trying to follow our own one-name Brazilian, Fred.

Not only would I love to have him as a teammate because of his skill and international experience, but I would love to have his golden, flowing, curly mane. He’s a player with his work rate and fitness level that could fit in well with the MLS style of play.
