Clyde Simms chat transcript

Thursday, May 28 - 1:30 PM ET

Clyde Simms is the motor in the midfield for D.C. United. The 26-year is a near-constant presence in the middle of the pitch and last year played the most minutes in all competitions of any player in the history of the club. This season, Clyde has played in all 12 of D.C.'s games missing only 45 minutes of time.

Clyde took your questions on all things United. Read the full transcript below.

Thanks for all of the questions. I wish I could stay longer to answer all of them. We'll do this again sometime later in the season. Make sure you get out to RFK for Thursday's game against New York!

how excited are you to sink your teeth into Real Madrid later this summer?

These are the types of games that you dream of playing when you're younger. The atmosphere should be great at FedEx Field. Their players are world class and it's always fun to see how you compare and compete with those types of players. As a team, we have nothing to lose, so we'll battle as hard as possible. We hear they're trying to stack their team before coming to FedEx with Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka, so they seem a little scared, but we'll be ready for them. Haha!

Why you be so fine???

Haha! I think I know who this is and you should be working, but I get all of my looks from my parents.

What do you hope to accomplish with DC United and your career?

I want to help be a part of a team that the fans of D.C. United can be proud of because of the effort we put in, game in and game out, and because of the silverware WE WILL WIN. And, as far as my career, I try not to really focus on myself because soccer is such a team game and I think the team's success is individual success.

As always, thank you from the fans for your tireless work.

So far this season, lots of ties even in games that United has dominated during the run of play. Which team(s) do you think have posed the toughest match ups and do you see challenging United at the end of the season for silverware?

For fun: Beard growing contest. Would you ever put money on anyone aside from Ben Olsen? Ever?

I would say so far Salt Lake has been a tough one - they really like to clog the midfield and they stay compact throughout the entire game, so both games we played against them they were hard to break down. But, honestly, we are confident as a team and we have a lot of depth this year and definitely think we can compete for silverware this season. So, we really just try to concentrate on ourselves and play our game, game in and game out.

We have a rookie this season - Brandon Barklage - that you might not realize, because he keeps everything cut close, but I think he can grow a beard with the best of them.

Do you prefer playing holding midfielder by yourself or do you like having a second guy (Benji) there to work with?

Honestly, I just want to win, so whatever suits the team best, I'm all for. But, you bring up Ben and I love playing with him. I learn a lot from him as a player on and off the field and he is a great teammate, just like all of my teammates. But, whether it's a 3-5-2 or a 4-4-2, I try to play to make the team better and the players around me better.

Who were your soccer idols growing up?

One of my biggest ones was Eddie Pope. He went to the same high school that I did and so I followed his career growing up and would get comments from local coaches saying that I could be "the next Eddie Pope." But, my favorite player to watch was probably Brazil's Ronaldo - the Brazilian National Team was really great at that time, but he was the one that made the team go.

Clyde,
Fellow ECU alumni here, wondering if you can describe your time at ECU? I remember the program being in shambles and is now non-exsistent. This is all the more testament to your development as a player. How you went from ECU to USA to MLS.

ECU was a perfect situation for me. As for soccer, I was able to go in as a freshman and get lots of playing time. I got the experience that a lot of good players that chose other schools might not have gotten as a freshman. I think I had great coaches - Devin O'Neal and Michael Benn - and I learned a lot about the game from them and got a lot of attention from both which I don't think I would have gotten at other schools. It's unfortunate that they don't have a program at this moment, but hopefully they're working towards having a men's program again soon.

Is it true you're unbeatable in Fifa'09 on XBox?

Best of luck tomorrow night.

I would like to think that, but I am a little old school and still play the PS2, which is sad but I honestly think I'm one of the better players on that system. Haha! Marc Burch likes to challenge me every now and again, but he has yet to be successful.

Hey Clyde, what is it like playing in front of the Barra Brava and Screaming Eagles each home game?

It's great - this is my fifth year in MLS and I still feel that their support is second to none in the League. There has been games in the past where I've been lacking energy, either before or during the game, and looking at them and seeing how enthused they are definitely keeps me going.

not a question...just wanted to say that in the past 3 years that i have had season tickets, i have really enjoyed watching you develop and become a constant fixture on the pitch. Keep up the good work...

PS...my group digs that you wear the red boots...well, maybe a question...any particular reason or is it just your style?

GO United!!! (destroy the RedBulls on tomorrow)

Firstly, thank you.

And about the red boots, honestly that's what was given to me to wear last season and I have gotten a lot of comments on the boots. Unfortunately, they gave me white this year and don't make the red anymore, but I'm hoping to see a pair in the near future.

Do you play any other sports for fun?

Nowadays, not too much for fun, just because I want to be safe off the field and don't want any unnecessary injuries, but growing up I was big into basketball. I actually almost quit playing soccer my freshman year in highschool to pursue basketball. I would also play golf and tennis with my dad growing up, but I kind of gave that up when I went away to college. I still do love to watch all competitive sports.

First of all, you are a great player. Here's the question: Do you think Kyle Sheldon does a good job for what he does? And who's your favorite European club? Thanks.

[Ed. note - this is Kyle Sheldon and personal questions from my cousins are off limits!]

I would have to say Manchester United - I was disappointed the other day in the Champions League final, but I love the way they play soccer and have been a huge fan of them ever since I was a kid.

Hi Clyde,

You've been at DC for 4 years now, do you see yourself carrying on at United until you retire or do you think you will play for another club in the future? Also, would you consider a move abroad and, if so, what country or countries would you like to play in?

Chris, United Kingdom

I actually had some trials set-up this past off-season in England and Denmark, but it took a lot of thinking and finally decided to stick with D.C. United - they've been good to me and I love the team and the city and I'm very happy here. I just signed a long-term contract with DC so I plan on being here for a while. If I had to choose another country to play in, it'd probably be England. I love the way they play, it's kind of a blue collar league, everyone works very hard and that's the way I like to play soccer.

Sooo Herb, what would you consider to be your best moves off the field, per say on the dance floor?

Haha - not much of a dancer, but I do love music and I actually play guitar. I'll have to work on my dancing, for sure.

Clyde,
This year it seems DC United has yet to put together 90 minutes of great soccer. We saw it last game where you dominated the first half but gave up two goals in the second. What do you think this can be attributed to and what is being done to change it?

Great question - as a team, we are looking for the answer to that question, but personally I think it takes a little more concentration throughtout the course of 90 minutes and sticking to the game plan that we set at the beginning of the game.
