WAGS Tournament continues to grow in 37th year


With a sizable jump in teams from last year, the 37th Annual WAGS Rael Vodicka Memorial Tournament this weekend is bigger and better than ever, and it has two new partners to add to what has already been a premier girls showcase event.

The tournament, which takes place in the Washington, D.C. suburbs every Columbus Day weekend, has partnered with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, becoming the fourth tournament in its showcase series, and is now being carried off by NSCAA’s events partner, Elite Tournaments.

The Washington Area Girls Soccer League fall season is in full swing as teams continue to do battle, aiming for the crowns in their respective divisions.

In some divisions, there are clear-cut favorites for the trophy, while in others, it appears that it may go down to the last day. Two teams that have stood out so far are the Lee-Mt. Vernon SC Patriots (Va.) in High School Division I, and the Herndon Freedom (also from Va.) Under-15 team, playing in Division I of their age group.

D.C. United’s U-16 Academy team built on their opening week victory with a decisive win over Virginia Rush this past weekend at Hampton Roads Soccer Complex in Virginia Beach, Va.

U-16 Recap:
D.C. United came out strong in their second USSDA league match, scoring three unanswered goals in the first 30 minutes against Virginia Rush. United preserved its 3-0 lead throughout the match by holding off several Rush attacks with solid defending and strong goalkeeping.
