D.C. United and its charitable arm, United for D.C., announced today the schedule for United Reads during the Fall of 2012. United Reads is a signature program created to encourage elementary school students in the greater Metropolitan area to fall in love with reading and to promote the importance of healthy lifestyles. United Reads is currently in its 10th year thanks to the generous support of presenting partner T.D. Bank and program sponsors Volkswagen and Gallup Government.

D.C. United today announced that Sonny Silooy has been named Director of Youth Development. Silooy will be tasked with overseeing all D.C. United Academy initiatives, including youth teams and youth training opportunities, as well as ensuring players within the system reach their utmost potential. Under Silooy’s guidance, United’s Academy system now boasts eight competitive and training teams that serve top flight players from throughout the mid-Atlantic region.

United today announced plans for United’s regular season home finale against the Columbus Crew to air live on Comcast SportsNet. The match was previously set for CSN Plus (CSN+). Throughout the 2012 Major League Soccer season, D.C. United collects items at select home games to benefit pre-determined non-profit organizations within the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area. During the month of October, United for D.C. – D.C. United’s charitable arm – will collect toiletries and personal hygiene items that will benefit Thrive DC, a dining program for homeless women in the area. As a D.C.

The Central Florida Sports Commission (CFSC) has announced that Soccer Spring Training will be coming to Central Florida. Six Major League Soccer (MLS) teams will converge on Central Florida to take part in three weeks of training camp and competition, culminating with the annual Walt Disney World Pro Soccer Classic at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

Salihi named to Albania's World Cup qualifying roster

D.C. United announced today that striker Hamdi Salihi has been named to the Albanian National Team roster for upcoming World Cup Qualifying matchups with Iceland on 10/12/12 and Slovenia on 10/16/12.

Salihi has been a regular for the Albanian National Team throughout his career. The striker has scored nine goals in 39 senior team matches.

U-18 Recap:
The U-18’s had a strong performance on Saturday as they hosted the McLean academy. The team dominated possession throughout the entire match, but went into the half with a score of 0-0. Just after the break, in the 62nd minute, McLean opened the scoring to take a 1-0 lead on the home side. The Black-and-Red academy squad continued to push and fight for an equalizer and the goal came in the 82nd minute when Mike Seaton (Capitol Heights, Maryland) headed in a cross from Chike Nwaezeapu (Washington D.C./Maret School).

D.C. United’s U-16 academy squad was in action this weekend against the McLean academy at Long Bridge Park in Arlington, Virginia. The game saw that U-16’s go down early by a score of 1-0 after conceding a goal on a counter-attack.
