D.C. United, Athlete to Atleta donate soccer equipment

Washington, D.C. (May 27, 2009) - D.C. United announced today it has partnered with Athlete to Atleta to provide soccer equipment to underserved youth in Costa Rica. An event to recognize those who have made the program a success will be held at the Embassy of Costa Rica on Thursday, May 28, at 5:30-7:30 p.m. United rookie Rodney Wallace, who has Costa Rican roots, will attend the event.

Formerly co-led by Victor MacFarlane, MacFarlane-Chang D.C. Soccer LLC is a venture that owns and controls the operating rights to D.C. United of Major League Soccer (MLS). The venture included MacFarlane, founder and managing principal of MacFarlane Partners, and William H.C. ("Will") Chang, chairman of the global investment firm Westlake International Group and one of the owners of the Major League Baseball’s San Francisco Giants.

Washington, D.C. (May 20, 2009) - D.C. United’s Santino Quaranta is this week’s MLS Goal of the Week winner. The winning tally was scored in the 85th minute of United’s stirring 2-2 draw at Chivas USA. On the play, Rodney Wallace sent a crossing ball into the goalmouth that was punched away by Chivas USA goalkeeper Zach Thornton. The ball deflected off of Fred before Quaranta ran onto the loose ball and crushed a 30-yard shot into the far-post side netting. The honor marks the third week in a row that a United player has been tabbed.

Season Update: With the end of the academy season in sight, the D.C. United youth teams had another busy schedule over the past weekend. It was a mixed bag of results as United faced the Baltimore Bays on Saturday, May 16 and Seacoast United on May 17. The U16s were unable to come away with a win on Saturday, losing 3-1 to the Bays, though the U18s won 2-0. Sunday against Seacoast United brought more success, with the U16s winning 2-1 and the U18s snatching a late 1-1 draw.

Trip to New England: The D.C. United Academy U16 and U18 teams traveled to New England to take on the Revolution Academy sides at Gillette Stadium. The U16s lost 3-2, while the U18s managed to come away with a 1-1 draw.

“These are the types of experiences where you grow as a player, learn how your body handles these situations and how to better be prepared the next time around,” said John Maessner, United’s Director of Youth Development. “Overall, the teams played fairly well but obviously were hoping for better results.”
