Last Wednesday, the U-18 and U-16 D.C. United Academy teams underwent extensive eye evaluations, providing yet another example of the elite physical tests that United’s youth players receive.

Dr. Keith Smithson of Northern Virginia Doctors of Optometry conducted the exams, which evaluated the following beyond the standard eye health test: visual reaction/decision-making speed, internal macular pigment density, glare-recovery speed, hand-eye coordination (goalkeepers), foot-eye coordination (field players) and depth perception. The purpose of these exams was to analyze each player’s visual peak in order to maximize their potential in that area of play.

The D.C. United Academy is among the League’s best, with its Homegrown players contributing the most First Team minutes of any club in MLS. The U-16s currently sit atop the East Conference’s Atlantic Division in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy League with a 13-1-3 record, while the U-18s are holding strong in fourth place with a 11-5-1 mark.

After recording seven saves on Saturday in a 0-0 draw with the New York Red Bulls for his second consecutive shutout, Bill Hamid was twice nominated for "MLS Save of the Week" for Week 3. The first save up for contention came in the 67th minute when Hamid pawed away a Tim Cahill volley from inside the six-yard box. The second nomination was perhaps Hamid's most crucial - a clearance off the line in stoppage time to keep the sides even.

Hamid previously was awarded "MLS Save of the Week" in Week 1 of this season and his efforts from Saturday earned him "MLS Player of the Week."

The D.C. versus New York is the longest standing rivalry in Major League Soccer. Since the inaugural MLS season, D.C United and the New York Red Bulls (formerly the New York/New Jersey Metrostars)have seen their share of dramatic clashes both in the regular season and playoffs. The name for the competition was not set until 2002 when both the trophy and rivalry was coined the Atlantic Cup.

RELATED:Looking back at memorable Atlantic Cup moments

D.C. United won the cup in 2012, and will visit New York twice and host the Red Bulls once in 2013 as reigning champions. This Saturday at Red Bull Arena (12:30 p.m. EST; NBC), the teams will meet for the first time this season as the quest for the Atlantic Cup begins.

  • If even, away goals scored in the matches *note this is not applicable in a three-game series in 2013
