United 17-8-3 all-time versus expansion clubs in their opening season

Through its 18th season, Major League Soccer has had nine expansion years. With the announcement of New York City FC, the 20th team to join MLS, we take a look back at how D.C. United has performed against expansion clubs in their inaugural MLS regular seasons.

The Black-and-Red has outperformed expansion clubs with a 17-8-3 regular-season record. United swept the opening-season series against four different clubs: the Chicago Fire, Chivas USA, Real Salt Lake and Toronto FC. Below are the year-by-year regular season records between D.C. United and expansion sides:

1998

  • vs Chicago Fire - 2-0
  • vs Miami Fusion - 2-2

2004

  • vs Chivas USA - 2-0
  • vs Real Salt Lake - 2-0

2006

  • vs Houston Dynamo - 1-1

2007

  • vs Toronto FC - 3-0

2008

  • vs San Jose Earthquakes - 1-1

2009

  • vs Seattle Sounders - 0-1-1

2010

  • vs Philadelphia Union - 1-1

2011

  • vs Portland Timbers - 1-0-1
  • vs Vancouver Whitecaps - 1-1

2012

  • vs Montreal Impact - 1-1-1

This weekend, D.C. United hosts the Portland Timbers. D.C. remains undefeated against the Timbers with an all-time record of 1-0-2. Portland has not visited RFK since October 19, 2011 when a goal from Dwayne De Rosario helped the Black-and-Red earn a draw. Match tickets for Saturday are still available ONLINE
