DC Mayor Vincent C. Gray has been a vocal supporter of D.C. United during the 2012 MLS Cup Playoff run. Today, he congratulated the team on a successful season.

Major League Soccer today announced that Chicago Fire defender Austin Berry is the 2012 MLS Rookie of the Year. D.C. United midfielder Nick DeLeon finished second in the voting.

DeLeon played in 28 matches (25 starts) is his first professional season and broke the club's rookie goal-scoring record with six goals. The talented winger also scored two goals in four matches during the 2012 MLS Cup Playoffs.

DeLeon is United's fourth consecutive MLS Rookie of the Year finalist. He is the third player to come in second (Pontius - 2009, Kitchen - 2011). Andy Najar won the award in 2010.

Gerson Umana

A report out today from TopDrawerSoccer.com offers some quotes from D.C. United U-16 Academy player, Gerson Umana.

Umana is currently tied for first in scoring among USSF Development Academy U-16 players with nine goals. “It’s really all team work,” Umana told TopDrawerSoccer.com. “I think as a team we are really complete [and] my coach is making me into a better player.”

From the Mayor, to other sports teams and players, to construction cranes, to the Newseum - the District is cheering for D.C. United during its 2012 MLS Cup Playoff run. Today, local indie rockers, The Dismemberment Plan offered their support via an article on their site titled "Why D.C. United is going to win this weekend."

The spirited piece offered four key reasons the Black-and-Red will win on Sunday and advance to the MLS Cup Final at RFK Stadium. "We got this," the article concluded. Read the full article

The band's bass player - and author of the article - Eric Axelson is the most ardent United supporter, but the whole band has been following the team. As they noted via their Twitter account, "[We have] DC United scarves and two soccer balls in the practice space." The band also announced the score of a recent D.C. United match while on stage during the recent Virgin Mobile FreeFest 2012.
