Goalkeeper Joe Willis has played a big role in D.C. United's run to the U.S. Open Cup final. So big, in fact, that Willis earned Player of the Round honors for his performance in United's 2-0 semifinal victory over the Chicago Fire.
Willis' six saves and late-game composure allowed the Black-and-Red to hand the Fire its first home defeat in Open Cup history. Goals on either side of halftime from Dwayne De Rosario and Nick DeLeon did the damage for D.C., who will be making its fifth appearance in an Open Cup final.
With the honor, Willis joins De Rosario as United's second Player of the Round in this year's competition. He's also the first goalkeeper to win the award since Richmond Kickers' Ronnie Pascale in 2011.
Now, for Willis and DCU, it all comes down to Oct. 1's final against Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium. Squaring off against one of MLS's strongest sides, United will look to carry its good form into the final and win the team's third Open Cup.
Dwayne De Rosario posted the above photo to his instagram today. There are four MLS greats in this picture, and between them, there are 404 MLS goals to date. Hall of Tradition inductee Jaime Moreno has an MLS second-best 133 goals, Black-and-Red Captain Dwayne De Rosario has 103 tallies, DCU forward and Guatemalan standout Carlos Ruiz has recorded 88 goals, while United assistant coach and former MLS and U.S. National Team forward Josh Wolff has found the net 80 times in MLS. Have you ever seen a picture of MLS players, past or present, with more than 404 combined tallies?
Ahead of Sunday's match against Chivas USA, we're throwing it back to Luis Silva and Carlos Alvarez as teenagers. The two attended Bishop Salesian High in Los Angeles together, where Silva won Offensive Player of the Year in 2007.
More good news for Andrew Dykstra and the Richmond Kickers! The standout goalkeeper has been nominated for USL PRO Goalkeeper of the Year!
Along with Dykstra, Kickers Joseph Ngwenya, William Yomby , Nate Robinson and coach Leigh Cowlishaw are also finalists for awards this year. Ngwenya, the league's leading scorer is nominated for USL PRO Most Valuable Player and Yomby is a finalist for Defender of the Year. Additionally, newcomer Robison is in the running for Rookie of the Year. Lastly, Kickers coach Leigh Cowlishaw is up for Coach of the Year.
Congratulations to all up for awards! The winners will be announced tomorrow at 2 p.m. ET. Good luck!
