Former D.C. United player Guy Kpene was in attendance tonight for DCU’s friendly vs. Chivas de Guadalajara. Kpene rocked the Black-and-Red from 2007-08 before making the move to the Houston Dynamo. The former United forward then went on to play for the USL PDL side, Long Island Rough Riders before making the decision to return to Dowling College and get his MBA in corporate finance.
“I finished my masters, and I’m looking for a job.” said Kpene. “I want to do finance, but I still have love for the game, so I don’t know. We will see.”
Kpene had always planned on going back to school, even while playing professionally.
“Oh, I always knew it. I was always good at school,” he said. “I knew at some point I was going to stop [playing soccer] and go to school again.”
Also spotted in the stands tonight was D.C. United legend Jaime Moreno, who is set to be inducted into United’s Hall of Tradition in September. Moreno enjoyed the match cheering along with the Barra Brava.

Last night, Joe Willis was phenomenal. He made seven outstanding saves, shutting out a hot Colorado side. He earned dcunited.com’s Spotlight for the night and much praise via Twitter. So, let’s check out what some of the DCU fans and United players had to say about their goalkeeper’s stellar performance.

Some attribute his heroics to one thing.
— Donald Wine II (@blazindw) July 8, 2013
Willis was even distracting the ladies from the match.
So I think there's a game happening right now but, like, I'm busy heaping love on Joe Willis over here. #clubbearhug #DCU -L

DCU Defender Ethan White gave Joe a "10 out of 10".
Tough performance but we dug out a pt thanks to Joe Willis. 10 out of 10 performance IMO. Still need improvement. Back to DC tomorrow. #dcu

Because Joe doesn't have a Twitter, United Midfielder Kyle Porter had to resort to a hashtag.

D.C. United Defender Taylor Kemp thinks the MOTM vote is simple.
Getting out of here with a point on the road against a good team is a positive. Joe Willis hands down man of the match #dcu

Here at D.C. United, all we have to say is...

D.C. United's Andrew Dykstra, currently on loan with USL PRO affiliate Richmond Kickers, has been named Week 15 USL PRO Player of the Week. The talented goalkeeper recorded two clean sheets this weekend, with a 2-0 win over Orland City SC on Saturday and 0-0 tie against VSI Tampa Bay FC on Sunday. Dykstra was previously named to the USL PRO Team of the Week for his standout performance in Week 9.
Additionally, both Dykstra and Homegrown product Micahel Seaton earned USL Team of the Week awards. Seaton netted the game-winner on Saturday, beating the previously undefeated Orlando.
On Monday, June 17 United for D.C. held its annual Celebrity Golf Tournament supported by Kaiser Permanente at National Golf Club. Over 140 golfers enjoyed a great afternoon of play, with all proceeds going to D.C. United’s charitable arm.
Participants were teamed up with D.C. United players and coaches as well as other well-known stars, including Oguchi Onyewu, John Harkes and AJ Wood. Participants had the chance to win prizes at contest holes, such as the Volkswagen Hole in One. This year, we saw the closet shot to the pin in tournament history! But, no one won the hot new ride.
Here is a list of all the winners from the day.
- 1st Place Overall: Monumental Sports
- 2nd Place Overall: Triad Construction playing with Perry Kitchen
- 3rd Place Overall: the Screaming Eagles with Nick DeLeon
- Closest to the Pin: Cushman & Wakefield's Casey Larmer
- Women's Longest Drive: White + Partners' Lauren Giles
- Men's Longest Drive: D.C. United defender Taylor Kemp
- Putting Contest: Screaming Eagles" Phil Martin
A big thank you goes out to Kaiser Permanente for its supporting sponsorship, Lenkersdorfer Jewelers for its silent auction sponsorship, GSI for hole sponsorship and Volkswagen for contest sponsorship. To learn more about United for D.C. visit unitedfordc.org.
