This past weekend, 16 of the top indoor soccer teams from the Washington Metropolitan area gathered at Rockville Sportsplex in Rockville, Md. to compete in Copa D.C. X, the annual 6v6 tournament hosted by D.C. United and presented by Volkswagen. For the ninth time in the ten-year history of the competition, La Mara was crowned champion after defeating Aegean Hawks F.C. 4-3 in the final on Sunday, November 7. La Mara won the first eight Copa D.C. tourneys but lost last year’s final to Charm City F.C., who were eliminated in the group stages on Saturday.

A total of 32 games were played during the two-day tournament. On Saturday, over 300 people packed both levels of viewing space for the group stage matchup between the Citron Sports Boys and the Fredericksburg Generals. Featuring goals and assists from former D.C. United Supporter’s Shield Winner (2007) and U.S. Open Cup Champion (2008) Rod Dyachenko, CSB won a 6-5 thriller in the most-watched match of the tournament. CSB, Aegean Hawks F.C. and Tropa de Elite – the only team to beat eventual champion La Mara in the group stage – stood alone with undefeated 3-0 records heading into the knockout rounds.

The surprise team of the tournament was “The Known.” On the way to an unexpected quarterfinals appearance, the club knocked off defending champion Charm City F.C. 7-4 in the opening match of the event. The most lopsided win of the weekend was a 12-0 victory by n-tieractive over Cobras de Woodbridge in the group stages.

In front of a largely pro-La Mara crowd at Sunday’s final, Aegean Hawks F.C. were looking for the first “D.C. United Double” after winning Super Copa earlier this year. However, La Mara reclaimed the title and took home a $3,000 check, the Copa D.C. X trophy and 12 Copa D.C. X gold first-place medals. Aegean Hawks F.C. received a check for $1,500 and 12 silver second-place medals. The Fredericksburg Generals received a $1,000 check and 12 bronze third-place medals, and Aguila went home with 12 pewter fourth-place medals.

Each team in the tournament received uniforms courtesy of adidas, one of Copa D.C. X’s supporting sponsors along with Electrical Alliance. La Mara wore black adidas kits with “LA MARA” screen-printed across the back, and Aegean Hawks F.C. wore Juventus-like white and black uniforms. La Mara has stated its intention to defend its title next year; as defending champion, the club’s registration fee for Copa D.C. XI will be waived.
