Catching up with United's Ultimate Sweepstakes winner

Meet Jason Berg, the winner of D.C. United's 2010 Ultimate Sweepstakes competition. For claiming the ultimate Black-and-Red prize, Berg takes home a pair of 2011 season tickets, a $500 team store shopping spree, a team autographed ball, along with an MLS match ball. Berg and his wife Sophie were invited to attend United's last match of the 2010 season to give Jaime Moreno a proper sendoff, and he looks forward to a stronger 2011 campaign. Sophie will likely be coming to most of the games, and as we discovered, there is a healthy MLS rivalry within the Berg household. The United States Marine was kind enough to chat with dcunited.com for a few minutes, and we look forward to seeing him in 2011!
Thanks for chatting with us, Jason. When and where did you enter the Ultimate Sweepstakes competition?
I was actually online looking at season tickets, and I saw the little box on the side and clicked on it. I didn't actually think I would win, nobody ever wins that stuff, right? But I gave it a shot and it worked out!
We hear you are a longtime fan of the club, tell us about your history with the Black-and-Red.
I've been a fan since the beginning. I still have the original jersey [from 1996], and I used to wear it when my wife and I were stationed out at Camp Pendleton in California. My wife and I had season tickets with the LA Galaxy - she's a big Galaxy fan, and I'm a big United fan. I continued to wear my jersey out there despite the heckling [laughs].
Tell us a bit about your background as a United States Marine.
I've been [a Marine] for 14 years now, and it's been a good journey. I've been stationed on the East Coast and the West Coast, and this is my first time back in DC for a while, so it's pretty awesome to be back. There is a good chance that I could be stationed back at Camp Pendleton again, but it's really cool being back here at least for a few years.
With your wife being a big Galaxy fan, what's it like when your two teams go head-to-head?
There is a lot of trash talking in the household, no question. She is from England, I'm from here, so when any English team plays an American team there is some talking that goes on there as well. Anytime the national teams play it's a good one. My wife is from Portsmouth, and when Portsmouth FC is not playing United I support them too, but I was happy about [the friendly] win this summer.
What was your experience like for the final game of the season and Jaime Moreno's last match as a United player?
Oh man, that was awesome. Just getting the invite to go [to the game], and being out on the field was just amazing. Seeing that stuff up close was unbelievable, I have never actually seen [a match] like that before. Seeing Jaime's name up in the top deck of the stands was great, what a fitting tribute to someone who has given everything to the club. It was a true class act for a class act player.
What are your thoughts on the wide array of prizes you have won in the Sweepstakes competition?
I'm still kind of in disbelief to be honest with you. It's a totally amazing thing, and to have it happen with a team that you admire so much is unreal. People always ask me why you are a Redskins fan, it's pretty easy to say because I grew up around here so there wasn't much choice. But I did have a choice when United started playing, and it was one of those things where you stick with the team through thick and thin. It's pretty awesome, and an amazing experience.
