Little Man, Big Impact

Andy Najar and Pato battle

Andy Najar won’t score every game, he won’t come to United’s rescue every game, and he won’t help D.C. win every game. But every single time he sets foot on the field, he is sure to come up with some play that makes the best fans in the league take notice at the special qualities of this supremely talented youngster.

For the 17-year old living in Northern Virginia, Najar has certainly made himself right at home in RFK – that’s where he scored his first goal, his first game-winning goal, and his first MLS goal. Najar is the youngest player on the team, yet he is the one leading by example. When D.C. United was trailing at home to Chivas USA, anybody could have taken the initiative and scored, but Andy was the one to do it. When D.C. needed an equalizer against the Galaxy, everyone on the field had the same opportunity to attack the free kick sent into the box, but Andy was the one who elevated above all others and smashed the header into the back of the net.

Najar assuredly will give maximum effort every moment that he’s on the field. His positive play is not just when going to goal, either. There was a recent play at RFK when a teammate’s cross from the opposite side of the field just missed connecting with a player in the box. Everybody thought the ball would go out for a throw-in, but Najar sprinted down the line to keep it in play and give his team another chance to create something. That play didn’t make a huge impact in the long run, but Najar is committed to doing the little things, and that is sure to eventually pay off in big ways.
