Now that D.C. United needs to focus once again on MLS play, I thought it would be a nice time to revisit the last MLS win.  What a game!  A stoppage time penalty to win it after allowing a late equalizer, wow!  It was marginally less dramatic since it was a field player forced to play goalie for the decisive kick, but sometimes the easiest ones are the hardest.  Anyway, with Carey Talley's heroic game winning penalty, I started to think about D.C.'s penalty history and I now present some things you may not have realized about D.C. United's PK past.

  • This past weekend marked the first time in franchise history that D.C. United scored a game-winning penalty kick in stoppage time.
  • This was not the first time Carey Talley took an MLS penalty for United. In his first stint with United, Talley took a penalty against New England on April 21, 2001.  His kick was saved by Juergen Sommer in the 43rd minute.  DC won 2-1.
  • Only 10 players have ever attempted a penalty kick for United in MLS play: Jaime Moreno, Raul Diaz Arce, Marco Etcheverry, Christian Gomez, Roy Lassiter, Carey Talley, Hristo Stoitchkov, John Harkes, Roy Wegerle, and Eliseo Quintanilla.
  • The last time a D.C. United player took a penalty kick in a league match besides Jaime Moreno or Christian Gomez was October 19, 2003 when Hristo Stoitchkov scored against Columbus goalie Jon Busch.  It was 34 consecutive penalties taken by Moreno or Gomez.
  • D.C. United had been awarded a penalty kick with the score tied in stoppage time on two other occasions, but missed them both was May 12, 2002 - Moreno's PK was saved by Tom Presthus (Tie 1-1), August 10, 2002 - Etcheverry's PK was saved by Tony Meola (Tie 0-0). In this game Moreno missed another PK in the 47th minute.  Etcheverry scored his penalty, but the referee ordered him retake it.  The second attempt was saved.
