Q&A: Emilio back in black

The man that led United in scoring each of the last three seasons was back on familiar territory this morning, as the players of D.C. United participated in one last training session ahead of tomorrow's pivotal Atlantic Cup clash against the New York Red Bulls (4 p.m. EST). Standing in the sunshine on the RFK Stadium pitch, Luciano Emilio seemed collected and at ease. Though the striker has not donned a United shirt since the end of 2009, the sight seemed all too familiar. An MLS MVP and Budweiser Golden Boot winner, Emilio has accomplished much in the League. However, as we found out from the Brazilian this afternoon, few players are as hungry at the moment.
BTB: How does it feel to be back?
Emilio: It is very good to be here. I joined the team yesterday, and trained for a bit and I trained today. I feel healthy and good, and I just want to play well and work hard for this team with my ability.
BTB: Any strange feelings at all?
Emilio: No way. This is home, and for me it is the best place to be. I have some wonderful memories in this stadium and I want to make a few more by helping the club.
BTB: Another big match with New York is coming up, what does this fixture mean to you?
Emilio: As you say, this is an important match. For me personally, I have played well against them over the years, and if I receive an opportunity to play I want to use my abilities to score.
BTB: What is your fitness level like ahead of the match?
Emilio: I am still gaining full match fitness at the moment, so assuming I get my papers [International Transfer Certificate] perhaps I will be used as a substitute. It would be great to get 20 or 30 minutes in this game, I would be happy - and I would try to score some goals.
BTB: You have enjoyed many good moments against New York, what is your favorite memory from the Atlantic Cup?
Emilio: I have many, but for me 2008 was amazing. We won 4-1 [on June 14] and I had a hat trick. Scoring three goals is always special, but to do it against New York at home was fantastic for me.
Note: As of 5:00 p.m. on April 30, 2009 Emilio's International Transfer Certificate was received, making him eligible for selection.
